Religion and the Founding of the American Republic
This exhibition demonstrates that many of the colonies that in 1776 became the United States of America were settled by men and women of deep religious convictions who in the seventeenth century crossed the Atlantic Ocean to practice their faith freely. That the religious intensity of the original settlers would diminish to some extent over time was perhaps to be expected, but new waves of eighteenth century immigrants brought their own religious fervor across the Atlantic and the nation's first major religious revival in the middle of the eighteenth century injected new vigor into American religion. The result was that a religious people rose in rebellion against Great Britain in 1776, and that most American statesmen, when they began to form new governments at the state and national levels, shared the convictions of most of their constituents that religion was, to quote Alexis de Tocqueville's observation, indispensable to the maintenance of republican institutions. The efforts of the Founders of the American nation to define the role of religious faith in public life and the degree to which it could be supported by public officials that was not inconsistent with the revolutionary imperatives of the equality and freedom of all citizens is the central question which this exhibition explores.

Two hundred thirty-four years ago today, America was at a great crossroads even before she was formed. On this day in 1776, fifty-six men gathered in Independence Hall in Philadelphia to debate the fate of the American colonies. John Adams described it as "This morning is assigned the greatest debate of all." Would we be a nation of free and independent states, or would we continue under the tyranny of King George? All knew what they were seeking and not all were in favor. If independence were to come, then surely war would as it was already upon them. Adams of all the founders knew that independence and war were connected at the hip:
"The object is great which we have in view, and we must expect a great expense of blood to obtain it. But we should always remember that a free constitution of civil government cannot be purchased at too dear a rate, as there is nothing on this side of Jerusalem of equal importance to mankind."
What did Adams mean by "this side of Jerusalem"? Could it be he had Jesus' sacrifice of blood in mind?
"So He came to Nazareth, where He had been brought up. And as His custom was, He went into the synagogue on the Sabbath day, and stood up to read. And He was handed the book of the prophet Isaiah. And when He had opened the book, He found the place where it was written: 'The Spirit of the LORD is upon Me, because He has anointed Me to preach the gospel to the poor; He has sent Me to heal the brokenhearted, to proclaim liberty to the captives and recovery of sight to the blind, to set at liberty those who are oppressed; to proclaim the acceptable year of the LORD.' Then He closed the book, and gave it back to the attendant and sat down. And the eyes of all who were in the synagogue were fixed on Him. And He began to say to them, 'Today this Scripture is fulfilled in your hearing.' So all bore witness to Him, and marveled at the gracious words which proceeded out of His mouth. And they said, 'Is this not Joseph’s son?'" (Luke 4:16-22)
Being set free from oppression is not a manmade concept; it is God-breathed and blood-bought. The tyranny of man is a cruel slavemaster and yet it pales in comparison to the tyranny of sin and the damage it does to a man's soul. The wrath of a tyrant brings terror and the shackles of imprisonment; the wrath of God because of our sin brings judgment, causing the gnashing of teeth and eternal damnation.
Our Founders fought for liberty, giving all they had willingly, acknowledging so in the last line above their signatures on our nation's birth certificate:
And for the support of this Declaration, with a firm reliance on the protection of divine Providence, we mutually pledge to each other our Lives, our Fortunes and our sacred Honor.
Those stirring words along with the rest of the document is our nation declaring to be free; the stirring words of Jesus in Luke 4 are His declaring to be Messiah.
John Adams understood the historical significance in what they were partaking. In a letter to a friend he wrote:
"Objects of the most stupendous magnitude, measures in which the lives and liberties of millions, born and unborn are most essentially interested, are now before us. We are in the very midst of revolution, the most complete, unexpected, and remarkable of any in the history of the world."
Jesus was well aware of His mission and of the eternal significance of His life as the Son of Man. When Pilate asked Jesus if He was a king...
"Jesus answered, 'You say rightly that I am a king. For this cause I was born, and for this cause I have come into the world, that I should bear witness to the truth. Everyone who is of the truth hears My voice.'" (John 18:37)
So how does our nation's independence relate to our liberty in Christ? Are we truly a Christian nation? No, we have never truly been a Christian nation, but we were founded on Christian principles and our heritage is certainly from Christianity. Again look at Adams' words in a letter written to Thomas Jefferson after they had both left the presidency:
"The general principles, on which the Fathers achieved independence, were the only Principles in which that beautiful Assembly of young Gentlemen could Unite...And what were these general Principles? I answer, the general Principles of Christianity, in which all these Sects were United...Now I will avow, that I then believe, and now believe, that those general Principles of Christianity, are as eternal and immutable, as the Existence and Attributes of God; and that those Principles of Liberty, are as unalterable as human Nature and our terrestrial, mundane System."
Our nation was founded on the Christian principle of Liberty, a liberty afforded to every man in the world. I speak not of American liberty, but eternal liberty, bought at the great expense of Christ's blood. Our nation's liberty has come at a great expense of blood and yet today we see that liberty being stolen from us by elected officials hell-bent on establishing a soft tyranny (to use Mark Levin's term). Our Founders would be ashamed of us today, especially those of us who call ourselves Christians.
Many a First Century Christian gave his and her life for Christian liberty; very few American Christians give more than a hoot about American liberty much less Christian liberty. Our greatest critic would probably be John Adams' son, John Quincy. One of his most famous quotes indicts us today:
"Posterity--you will never know how much it has cost my generation to preserve your freedom. I hope you will make good use of it."
A less famous quote of John Quincy Adams indicts the historical revisionists who try to claim we were not founded on Christian principles. In a speech given July 4, 1837, Adams asked:
"Why is it that, next to the birthday of the Savior of the World, your most joyous and most venerated festival returns to this day? Is it not that, in the chain of human events, the birthday of a nation is indissolubly linked with the birthday of the Savior? That it forms a leading event in the Progress of the Gospel dispensation? Is it not that the Declaration of Independence first organized the social compact of the foundation of the Redeemer's mission upon earth? That it laid the cornerstone of human government upon the first precepts of Christianity and gave to the world the first irrevocable pledge of fulfillment of the prophecies announced directly from Heaven at the birth of the Savior and predicted by the greatest of the Hebrew prophets 600 years before?"
Sunday is Independence Day and as Americans we will enjoy hamburgers and hot dogs, watermelon and fireworks. John Adams would have enjoyed that; he called for that (more on that Sunday). May we also remember not only the great expense of blood shed for our national liberty, but also and more importantly remember the inconceivable expense to our Heavenly Father for our eternal liberty, should we so choose to receive it.

Obama on Jobs: Reality is Not Optional

In response to various comments regarding my last blog post: Obama on Jobs: Worst Track Record in History.

Actually the full quote as attributed to Economist, Thomas Sowell was: "Hope is not reality, and reality is not optional."
Of all the jobs created, and recovered before progressives co-opted the Democrat party, how many were created by the lie that it is up to the Government to borrow money and use it to provide economic stimulus? The answer is none. The old liberal policy used to be called tax and spend (i.e. get the money first and then spend it). The tried and true conservative policy is to cut taxes and let the people spend their own money (i.e. let the free market dictate). The progressive slant has regressed into a new policy called, borrow and spend (i.e. borrow money by the trillion, spend it first, and then tax the hell out of anyone who survives).
We know that the first two methods worked to some degree, although we often disagreed on which was better. All we have to do is go back in history to measure their results. The goal has always been to grow our economy in line with the population, with limited inflation and full employment. But under this new borrow and spend philosophy, all we have is the hope that, if you are ever able to get your head above water, you will be taxed back into oblivion to pay for all the money spent to get you there. In the meantime you just hope that the $250 or $400 per year government handout is enough to get you by.
The hope that an unproven policy will be able to produce the same result as proven methods is not only uncertain, but in this matter impossible. Uncertainty is optional, but reality is not.
Joe Biden recently stated, "We will never be able to recover the eight million jobs that were lost." Why would he say that? Because there is no way that it can be done under progressive ideology. It doesn’t take a rocket scientist to figure that out.
Under progressive ideology, the economy is something that will continue to function efficiently no matter which policies are crammed down its throat: stimulus, health care, energy policy, financial reform, etc... All of which may be noble goals in a fictitious world, but neither has anything to do with economic growth, nor job creation. True, each may create a few (net) jobs in the next 20 to 40 years, but there may not be any need by that time. In the end, you may be able to force all of these wonderful policies upon the peons, but by then no one will care because the great economy that once existed will be no more.
We need an economy that works for us today, not 20 years from now.
In reality, mandatory health insurance won’t do much good if there are no doctors or hospitals to visit. And where will one go to purchase it when all the insurance companies are gone? Renewable energy and carbon taxes won’t do much for the masses then living in cardboard boxes. Financial reform will be for naught if no one has any money left to save or invest. You can’t have it both ways. Either you put jobs and the economy first, or you fail on all counts.
Hoping that an unproven set of policies will work is not reality. We gave it a shot by spending well over $1 trillion, and it didn’t work. The national debt is now almost 100% of GDP and there is nothing to show for it. So what do you want to do? Do you want to keep on borrowing and stimulating until there’s nothing left? Or should we perhaps pause and consider making a u-turn? I say we heed the warning and make a u-turn before it's too late.
We know what works, all we have to do is look back in our history at the policies that made America great.

ARTL Criticizes Rival National Right To Life

DENVER -- American Right To Life Action, the political 527 group which claims a role in derailing Mitt Romney's presidential hopes, is now publishing a critical profile of the National Right To Life Committee. American RTL's anticipated dossier of its rival arrives simultaneously with National RTL's annual convention this weekend in Pittsburgh.
ProlifeProfiles.com, created by a nationwide research team working for American RTL, documents that National RTL has violated its sacred trust by staunchly opposing all efforts to enforce the unborn child's right to life and personhood; by its defense of politicians who ignore abortion when nominating judges; and by its repeated endorsement of pro-abortion politicians.
"National RTL's 30-year strategy of trying to get the Supreme Court to admit its error and overturn its own Roe v. Wade decision is naive legally, historically, and politically," said Darrell Birkey, ARTL research director. Their failure to overturn Roe is not surprising because the Justices have referred to their 150-year old pro-slavery Dred Scott decision 56 times without the court ever admitting to the illegitimacy of that ruling's crime against millions of people. "After a war, a constitutional amendment, and abolition, the Supreme Court still has not acknowledged its illegitimacy for denying full personhood rights of black slaves," said Birkey, "so waiting for the court is a blunder."

In today's BreakPoint Commentary, "Redefining the First Freedom: More than Worship," Chuck Colson begins: "For some time now, I’ve been warning you about the various threats to religious freedom...," and goes on to assert "But now I’m seeing the threat to religious freedom in its most pernicious and dangerous form ever."
In a nutshell, here’s what happened. In a speech at Georgetown University, Secretary of State Hillary Clinton delivered a speech on human rights. Not only did she talk about the right “to love in the way you choose,” (an obvious attempt at making protecting gay rights a top priority for the U.S. government), she also talked about “freedom of worship.”
But she never mentioned freedom of religion. Only freedom of worship. This is a big change.
In the First Amendment, the founders (whose work we celebrate this weekend) wisely ensured that government could not prohibit the “free exercise” of religion. And that means so much more than freedom of worship. It guarantees that we are not restricted to living out our faith in the privacy of our homes or church sanctuaries. It means we are free to exercise our religion—and contend for faith--in every area of life.

Boston's Catholic health care system, which dates back to 1863, is about to be sold, converted to a for-profit entity, and rapidly secularized. Caritas Christi Health Care --- the network of six Catholic hospitals affiliated with the Archdiocese of Boston --- is being acquired by the Steward Health Care System, a subsidiary of Cerberus Capital Management.
Despite assurances by Caritas and the Archdiocese that the hospitals' Catholic identity will be retained for at least three years, the Notice of Transaction filed by Caritas with the Public Charities Division of the Attorney-General's Office on May 5th, 2010 clearly indicates that the new owners may unilaterally terminate the Catholic identity of the hospitals at any time for virtually any reason provided they are willing to pay just three percent above the original purchase price, which is an additional twenty-five million dollars.
If the Steward Health Care System finds compliance with Catholic medical ethics to be "unlawful or materially burdensome," which is broadly defined as anything which would "jeopardize the welfare of its patients, employees, or the communities in which it operates," the determination of which will be in "the sole discretion of Steward," the system's Catholic identity could be immediately abandoned upon payment of the termination fee.
This is an impending disaster for the Church, the Catholic community, the Pro-Life movement and Catholics in the medical and nursing professions!
This means that such iconic Catholic institutions as Carney Hospital, and St. Elizabeth's Medical Center may become participants in abortion, contraception, sterilization and passive euthanasia. Catholic and other pro-life doctors, nurses and administrators will lose their conscience protections. Charitable care for the poor will suffer, and Catholic principles of social justice in employee relations, such as the Catholic principle of the just wage, will be replaced by the capitalist law of supply and demand.
There will be a public hearing on the future of Carney Hospital on Thursday, July 1st, 2010 at 6 p.m. at the IBEW Hall, Local 103, at 256 Freeport Street in Dorchester. The hearing is being sponsored by the Massachusetts Department of Public Health and Attorney-General Martha Coakley's Office. Please make every effort to attend this important public event and oppose the sale of Caritas Christi until stronger guarantees of its continuing Catholic identity are in place.

After a successful summer, the PersonhoodNow! project has finally come to a close. In this final blog update, the team would like to catch you up on what's gone on since our last blog update and fill you in on what we're looking toward in the future.
Our last weeks of the project we're spent traveling throughout the state (literally, we reached every part of the state) working with local contacts.
After leaving Sarasota and Ft. Myers, we hit the road to Naples. We started off the trip by petitioning at Sonrise Christian Church which is pastored by our good friend, Mr. Tom Harris. The church family is actively involved in engaging culture. They wholeheartedly signed the petition and took thousands more for others to sign. We scooted out the door in order to visit a Grace Bible Church potluck where we spoke with the pastor of several satellite churches about getting his congregation involved.
Our hospitable hosts in Naples were the Scofield family who entertained us with exciting games of Balderdash and filled us up with lots of healthy food! We spent a day dropping off information packets to local churches and taught a training workshop for a large group of volunteers. Members and leaders of a local chapter of the Institute for Cultural Communicators attended our training event. They took thousands of petitions and decided to take on petition circulation as a group project over this next year. The church that hosted the training workshop, New Hope Ministries, rolled out the red carpet for us: They provided audio and video recording of our workshop. These recordings can be used by PersonhoodUSA to train people across the country.
The cherry on the sundae was when we were invited to an event with keynote speaker and pro-life leader, Dr. Alveda King, the niece of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. She herself has been involved with personhood efforts in her home state of Georgia, so she was delighted to hear about all of our progress when spoke to her before the program. During her presentation, she asked us to tell the audience about ourselves and what we are doing. Plus she thought our iPerson shirts were pretty rockin' and had one of our PersonhoodNow! volunteers come to the front to model one for the rest of the group. The PersonhoodNow! team was also interviewed by the Naples Daily Times during the event.
On our way from Naples to to the Miami-Fort Lauderdale area, we stopped at the Everglades National Park and Biscayne National Park in order to stamp our National Parks Passports. We went a little further south of our destination by going to Key Largo and stretching out on beaches of the Keys.
Our friends, the Forman Family put us up (put up with us?) in Fort Lauderdale. They were such a blessing! In Fort Lauderdale, we contacted churches, met with pastors, conducted a training workshop and circulated the petition at a sunday church service at the First Christian Church of Fort Lauderdale. On Saturday afternoon, we petitioned outside a gun show. The response was mixed, but positive overall. We got into several great conversations and were able to challenge others opinions on the issue.
Our last stop of our tour of the state was the city of Jacksonville. Sarah Brooke is an all amazing PersonhoodNow! youth volunteer. In addition to finishing up courses and preparing to travel abroad for a scholastic competition, she set up several events for us to petition at, got us in contact with several churches, and wrangled a sizable crowd into coming to our training workshop. Our hosts, the Baker family, deserve an honorable mention as well. They were a very hospitable and fun family. While in Jacksonville, we met with local pastor and trained excited petitioners.
After bidding our farewell to the people of Jacksonville, we hit the road. Austin, dropped off the rest of the team in Atlanta, GA on his way back to Texas to start summer college courses. The rest of the team traveled to the Institute for Cultural Communicators' National Convention in Maryland in order to staff the event and share the Personhood message, before returning to their respective home states.
While the PersonhoodNow! Team is no longer barnstorming the state of Florida, PersonhoodFL is continuing to gain momentum. A major focus of our project was to train others and help build a statewide network of pro-life leaders. Our group was also a "guinea pig" project to see what a PersonhoodFL action team might look like. To our great satisfaction, action teams are sprouting up around the state! This month we celebrate the ratification of the US Constitution back on June 21st of 1788. The Constitution replaced the Articles of Confederation as the authorization for the operation of a federal government as the means to facilitate the cooperation between the several sovereign and united states.
Although the federal government was authorized with relatively few responsibilities, it has defaulted on its obligations. Here is one of the most obvious failures of the federal government.
The federal government has failed to maintain a republican form of government as guaranteed in Article 4, Section 4. Two contributing factors to this failure are the adoption of the 17th Amendment to the Constitution and the ignorance and/or corruption of our elected representatives.
The 17th Amendment works in opposition to the original intent and delicate balance that our founding fathers set forth in the Constitution. When all of our representatives are directly elected by pluralities, then we have a convoluted democracy, think tyranny by the majority, not a republic. Additionally, with this change, the states lost their only direct representation in the federal system. The 17th Amendment can be called the Mob Rule Amendment.
Then, there are ignorant or corrupt elected officials who have abandoned the principles of republican government. When our representatives pander to the voters so that they might stay in elected office in perpetuity, they often give into the will of the majority and ignore the constitution. Our representatives take an oath to defend and be faithful to our Constitution, not to bend to the will of their constituents or to be reelected! A republican form of government means that the rule of law, namely the Constitution, reigns supreme, not the fancy of the majority at any given time. Not having the manhood to stand up to the majority and defend the rule of law shows either a sever lack of understanding of the Constitution or a blatant disregard for it.

WASHINGTON, June 29 /Christian Newswire/ -- Chaplain Klingenschmitt has contracted with a team of investigative journalists including Brian Camenker, Amy Contrada and Peter LaBarbera to investigate and report breaking news about Supreme Court nominee Elena Kagan.
While serving as Dean of Harvard Law School, Kagan's administration demanded and forced Blue-Cross, Blue-Shield to cover sex-change operations as an "equal right" paid benefit, harming gender-confused students, as confirmed in 2006 and 2008 by Harvard Crimson newspaper articles.

Progressive Policies are Losing 4.2 Million Jobs Annually

On January 9, 2009, a staff writer for the Wall Street Journal wrote a smear piece entitled, “Bush On Jobs: The Worst Track Record On Record,” in which an attempt was made to show that Bush was somehow the worst President, and that therefore, Conservative economic policies (i.e. tax cuts) don’t work.
According to the staff writer, George W, Bush created a dismal +375,000 jobs per year during his eight year term; Bill Clinton created +2.9 million jobs per year; while George H.W. Bush created +625,000; Reagan prospered by +2.0 million; Carter by +2.6 million; etc… The staff writer also went into population growth during each term and the percentage of change in the population (for whatever reason). President George W. Bush entered office in 2001 just as a recession was starting, and is preparing to leave in the middle of a long one. That’s almost 22 months of recession during his 96 months in office.
His job-creation record won’t look much better. The Bush administration created about three million jobs (net) over its eight years, a fraction of the 23 million jobs created under President Bill Clinton’s administration and only slightly better than President George H.W. Bush did in his four years in office.
Naturally it is important to use this same benchmark to measure how Barack H. Obama stacks up against his predecessors. So I went over to the good old Bureau of Labor Statistics website and made up my own table, based on the raw data. I brought my chart up to date through May 31, 2010. True, Obama has only been in office for 17 month’s, but we can at least get an idea of how he measures up.
Like the WSJ writer, the counts are based on total payrolls between the start of the month the president took office (using the final payroll count for the end of the prior December) and his final December in office (May 31, 2010 for Obama). Thus, there is no blaming the last POTUS for inheriting a bad economy, and no foul in taking credit for inheriting a good one. After all, being President is about leadership, and leaders take what is in front of them and do the best they can.
According to my table, Barack Obama has lost a total of -4.2 million jobs per year, making him, to date, the worst President in history. G.W. Bush actually created 1.1 million jobs per year during his eight-year term. Bill Clinton is responsible for 2.3 million jobs in each of his years. George H. W. Bush can lay claim to 881,000 during each of his four years. Reagan gets credit for 2.0 million jobs per year. And finally, even Jimmy Carter can boast in having created 2.6 million. Net job creation is so much better than, economy killing, Progressive policies that there really is no comparison.
Now I am not naïve enough to believe that Presidents, or the governments for that matter, are responsible for job creation, but if you want to make that case, at least get the numbers right. It looks like the WSJ staffer padded Clinton’s numbers while taking away from both of the Bush’s. At the same time, he did manage to get both Reagan's and Carter’s numbers right.
In conclusion, thus far, the Progressive policies of Barack H. Obama are failing. There ought to be a law. Actually there is a law. It’s called, 'The Law of Supply and Demand’. When prices fall, demand increases. When taxes are reduced, investment, production and employment increase. And when supply is increased, prices fall, leading to increased demand. Government intervention in the private sector has never worked, and it never will. Reducing the size of government, lowering taxes, and decreasing government regulation actually work after all. We will most definitely be following up.

I have not departed from the commandment of His lips; I have treasured the words of His mouth more than my necessary food." (Job 23:10-12)
Imagine if Christians treasured God's Word, the Holy bible, more than food. If that were to happen then the revival we all seek would come to the American Church; there would be nothing God couldn't accomplish through His people.
Before you protest and say you do love His word, let me stop you and say directly, "No you don't."
You don't love God's Word more than your favorite TV show, more than the Internet, more than your hobby, more than your favorite outdoor activity, more than a loved one, or more than sleep for that matter. If you did reading your Bible would not be the activity that takes the least amount of your time during the day, if it takes any of your time during the day.
Can you imagine your Christian walk if the psalmist's words were true in your life?
"How sweet are Your words to my taste, sweeter than honey to my mouth!" (Psalm 119:103)
Imagine your Christian walk if we approached the Bible in the manner David did:
"The law of the LORD is perfect, converting the soul; the testimony of the LORD is sure, making wise the simple; the statutes of the LORD are right, rejoicing the heart; the commandment of the LORD is pure, enlightening the eyes; the fear of the LORD is clean, enduring forever; the judgments of the LORD are true and righteous altogether. More to be desired are they than gold, yea, than much fine gold; sweeter also than honey and the honeycomb. Moreover by them Your servant is warned, and in keeping them there is great reward. " (Psalm 19:7-11)
How important was the Bible to our Founding Fathers? To listen to present day historical revisionists, not at all. I could list dozens of quotes disputing that fact but let me quote a somewhat historically obscure founder albeit very influential. Fisher Ames was a Congressman from Massachusetts when the Bill of Rights were being formulated. It was Ames who suggested these words to the First Amendment:
"Congress shall make no law establishing religion, or to prevent the free exercise thereof, or to infringe the rights of conscience."
Was Fisher Ames thinking of "separation of church and state" at that time? Not in the present day vernacular. Notice his comment one month after he suggested the above words:
"We have a dangerous trend beginning to take place in our education. We're starting to put more and more textbooks into our schools...We've become accustomed of late of putting little books into the hands of children containing fables and moral lessons...We are spending less time in the classroom on the Bible, which should be the principal text in our schools...The Bible states these great moral lessons better than any other manmade book."
Fisher Ames would be excoriated in today's press for those words. I would guess that Mr. Ames would stand solid as a rock against today's tide to dumb down America and kick Jesus out of every facet of society. Read more of his beliefs concerning education:
"Should not the Bible regain the place it once held as a schoolbook? Its morals are pure, its examples are captivating and noble...The reverence for the sacred book that is thus early impressed long lasts; and, probably, if not impressed in infancy, never takes firm hold of the mind...In no Book is there so good English, so pure and so elegant, and by teaching all the same they will speak alike, and the Bible will justly remain the standard of language as well as faith."
That would never happen again in America most of you are no doubt thinking. You're right, it went away because of acquiescing Christians and it will stay away because of cowardly Christians. Am I advocating that the Bible be taught in American schools? No, government schools are too far gone for rescue in my mind. What I am advocating is that the Bible be taught in self-described American Christian homes.
